Calcium is one of the major nutrient elements required for plant growth. It has significant functions in cell formation and photosynthesis. It activates enzymes, is a structural component of cell walls, influences water movement in cells and is necessary for cell growth and division. Some plants must have calcium to take up nitrogen and other minerals. It is easily leached. Plants need calcium from emergence to maturity.

Calcium related disorders may occur in many fruit and vegetable crops. However, it should be noted that these disorders are caused by an inadequate supply of calcium to the affected tissues. This is often related to the availability of the element to the plant, rather than the presence of the element in the soil or plant tissue.

In order to address calcium deficiencies, direct application of foliar calcium sprays to the affected tissues may be considerably more effective than soil applications of calcium. This is especially important when due to mineral imbalance or other causes such as; root uptake of calcium is obstructed.

In terms of its use as a soil conditioner, calcium has been shown to displace exchangeable sodium from the cation exchange sites of soils high in sodium. With irrigation of dry land, this type of fertilizer may be used to reclaim saline areas, soften and crumble crusted soils, and improve infiltration for some puddled soils.
