Life Before Chemicals

Before the arrival of the chemical companies, our grandfathers and their forefathers knew that in order to feed the plant, we first had to feed the soil. They knew that whether growing trees, fruits, flowering plants, vegetables, sod, turf, lawn as well as agricultural crops, greenhouse, and hydroponics growers, they first had to feed the soil and the soil in return would feed the plant. If it worked to grow organically back then --- why do we feel now we know more than Mother Nature?

In most cases nature fixes its own weed and insect problems. An insect will not attack a healthy plant. A walk through a long standing forest will show that nature will grow a different plant almost every three years to supply nutrients needed to keep the soil in balance and …no weeds.

Exhausted and devitalized soil results in internally weak plants, which are highly vulnerable to diseases and pest attack. They will also be nutritionally incomplete, will keep poorly and taste inferior compared to the way food tasted prior to the synthetic chemical fertilization era. The best approach is the defensive one of properly feeding the plant to increase its strength and resistance to pests and doing it The Natural Way. This may be done with foliar nutrient sprays and by applying all-natural fertilizing materials on or in the soil, along with protective mulching where appropriate

My grandfather (passed in 1962) used to take me for a walk in the field several times throughout the year, as did his father. The most important walk in the field was the one we used to take just before harvest.

He used to say "We'll go now to see how we feed the livestock this winter, see how the bugs are doing." "The more we feed the bugs, the better the feed, the healthier the animals" This made no sense to me at first.

He always talked about feeding the bugs which I later learned he was talking about the bacteria. His thoughts were - in order to get the most out of everything he fed, feed the appropriate food chain. So, that walk in the field, was to determine how much molasses, beet, turnip, etc. to feed. Get the most out of the feed by feeding the bugs. Feed the bugs when feeding the livestock. Feed the bugs in the manure pile. Feed the bugs in and on the soil when you spread the manure. Then cover the field with a special liquid formula.

The end result was better crops and NO chemical. His formula is now our formula.
